Unalienable Rights

Ok, My three biggest interests have got to be computers, music and politics. Now when all three cross paths in a story like this I just can’t keep quiet.

I assume most if not all of my readers have at one point and time used AOL Instant Messenger to communicate with friends. WELL, AOL has just posted new “Terms Of Service” for AIM, that includes the rights for AOL to use anything and everything you send through AIM in any way they want - without informing you. Here is an excerpt: “…by posting Content on an AIM Product, you grant AOL, its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, assigns, agents and licensees the irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide right to reproduce, display, perform, distribute, adapt and promote this Content in any medium. You waive any right to privacy.”

This would mean if I’m working on lyrics or music to a song, and I message my guitarist about it and we talk back and forth eventually coming out with a song for our band, then AOL has full rights to that material. I for one am going to be protesting this greatly. Please post your opinions-

Current (Working, I Think) ‘.torrent’ Indexing Sites

R.I.P. Suprnova.Org

Seeing as how I’m the original author of peice of software that made use of one of the greatest BitTorrent websites of all time - Suprnova.org, I felt it only right to say something in the wake of the recent shutdown of the site. Its truly a sad day for Online P2P when something like this happens. My software, SuprNovaXP [Which was kept up by one of the active members of my forums, Conker (Thanks man, you rock)], will now most likely go through some reworking, some obvious name changes and will most liekly turn into a program that has similar features but will support a few other BitTorrent indexing sites, if you know of any you’d like to see supported, please let me know in the comments or the forums, the first one we’re looking into is www.torrentspy.com, they have a great site going and should be pretty easy to interface with. Well I’ll keep you posted, for now, peace out-

Rock The Vote!

Well, It’s been a while since an article was posted. But, I feel it my civil duty as a netizen to do my best to compel you to do your part as an American citizen. (If you are not an American citizen or are unable to vote for some reason, please disregard this message). No matter what you’re views are: liberal, conservative, libertarian, blah, blah, blah, PLEASE - do your part and vote on November 2nd. It does not matter one bit who you choose to vote for. But please, make an informed decision and do your part. Let your voice be heard.

I will however say that I am an openly known Democrat. I do support John Kerry. I am completely opposed to the Bush regime. But despite this fact, I do not care if you are the most hardcore Republican in town, please do your part and still go vote for your candidate. If we do not vote, we are throwing away one of the greatest freedoms available to us.

Ok, I will step off my pedestal now.

Thank you for your time-

Geek Humor, Eat ‘Em Up…

Computer Virii Jokes

OPRAH WINFREY VIRUS:

Your 1.3gb hard drive suddenly shrinks to 80mb and then slowly expands back to 1.3gb.

AT&T VIRUS:

Every three minutes it tells you what great service you are getting.

MCI VIRUS:

Every three minutes it reminds you that you’re paying too much for the AT&T virus.

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER VIRUS:

Terminates and stays resident. Then starts running for office.

TERRY RANDLE VIRUS:

Prints “oh no you don’t” whenever you choose “Abort”.

CONGRESSIONAL VIRUS:

Runs every program on the hard drive simultaneously, but doesn’t allow the user to accomplish anything.

EMELDA MARCOS VIRUS:

Sings you a song (slightly off key) on boot up, then subtracts money from your Quicken account and spends it all on expensive shoes it purchases through Prodigy.

GEORGE W. BUSH VIRUS:

Starts up the computer with apparent intention of ridding the computer of all other virii, but ends up only looking for more oil…

L.A.P.D. VIRUS:

It claims it feels threatened by the other files on your PC and erases them in “self-defense”.

Dr. Suess, Nerd Style

If a Packet Hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort, and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted ’cause the index doesn’t hash, then the situation’s hopeless and your systems gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel on another protocol, that’s repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall, and your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse, then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, ’cause as sure as I’m a poet, the sucker’s gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy’s getting sloppy on the disk, and the microcode instructions cause unnecessary risk, then you have to flash your memory and you’ll want to RAM your ROM. Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your mom.

Cracker’s Delight (Dark Tips)

Today’s Dark Tip is one of my favorite password recovery tools for Windows: Cain & Abel. C & A is not your typical local machine password cracker but a network password recovery tool.

C & A combines actual brother applications: Cain recovers the passwords and Abel pulls off the brute force attacks. C & A is different from other password crackers because it acts as a sniffer to intercept and crack passwords in real-time.

Yeah, yeah, you’ve heard this before right? Well, here are more features.

  • Fast and contains APR (ARP poison routing), which enables sniffing on switched LANs by hijacking IP traffic of multiple hosts at the same time.
  • Analyzes encrypted protocols such as SSH-1 and HTTPS if used with APR and a man-in-the-middle situation.
  • Ships routing protocols authentication monitors and routes extractors, crackers for all common hashing algorithms and for other various specific authentications.
  • Works on password calculators, decoders, and other utilities.

I love the ARP cache poisoning feature. It will poision the cache of any host with a false ARP entry allowing it to foward traffic to the destination machine. Leran more about ARP cache poisoning.
This app has a great user interface and works amazingly well. Best of all, it’s completely free.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately, I’ve been needing some time away from school stuff to get the site back in full swing, in fact I’m in class right now, anyways check back later, the updates should be alot more frequent.

NOTE: This tip works only on systems with SysV init, as Debian GNU/Linux and RedHat Linux, not Slackware).

When the system boots, it reads some files to setup itself. After the kernel has booted, it starts a process called init, with PID 1. Init reads it’s main configuration file called /etc/inittab to get the default runlevel, and a few other settings.

Runlevels

A linux system has a few different runlevels, each configured for a specific task. A Debian system normally goes into runlevel 2 when it boots, starting up daemons and more to make the system accessible in different ways and by several users at once. If you start the system in runlevel 1, you’ll get a singleuser system for maintainance. Setting the runlevel to 0 will do a system halt, and runlevel 6 will reboot the machine after taking down daemons, umounting file systems and other important things before a shutdown. The runlevels I give here as example are specific for a Debian system, a RedHat or Slackware of whatever distribution have different runlevels for the different modes of operation.

Runlevel Specific Files

For each of the runlevels, there are files that specify what to do when entering that runlevel. Or, to be more exact, the files are links to files in another directory, this way you won’t have 6 copies of each file when the file is used in 6 runlevels.

The files have names that start with either S or K, then a number, and after that a descriptive word. The S or K stands for Start or Kill, the number stands for when the file is executed, and the rest of the filename is there for uniqeness and completeness. Take the following file list for example, it’s from my /etc/rc2.d, ie files to execute for runlevel 2.

S10sysklogd
S20gpm
S20ssh
S30netstd_misc
S99xdm
S12kerneld
S20iplogger
S20timecount
S89atd
S13dhcpc
S20lpd
S20xfs
S89cron
S15netstd_init
S20ppp
S25netstd_nfs
S91apache
S18netbase
S20sendmail
S26firewall
S99rmnologin

The file S10syslogd will be executed first, and the file S99xdm will be executed as the last of the files for runlevel 2. This way you may decide when in the boot process something is done.

On a Debian system, the files are located in /etc/rc?.d, where the ‘?’ stands for the runlevel. The symbolic links mostly points to files in the directory /etc/init.d. Those files are scripts that take start or stop as arguments, some of them have reload too. When init reads in the /etc/rc2.d and finds the S10syslogd, it will see that’s a symbolic link to /etc/init.d/sysklogd and execute /etc/init.d/sysklogd with the argument start. After that it will do the same thing with S12kerneld and so on.. If the filename is K10sysklogd, it will execute /etc/init.d/sysklogd with argument stop instead. You get it ? Me to :) RedHat has it’s files in /etc/rc.d/rc?.d and /etc/rc.d/init.d

Bmon is a commandline program that comes in very handy for watching the throughput of data ports. While there are several GUI utilities to do this, the fact that Bmon is a terminal program allows you to log into a remote server and monitor its throughput. In fact, it’s installed on my server so I can use it to make sure the computer’s connection is up to speed.

You must have the Developers Tools installed to build the program. Download the source code here.

Once the file is unstuffed open a terminal. Using the cd command (change directory) navigate to the bmon folder. You can enter the location manually or drag and drop the folder into the terminal after typing cd and a blank space.

Enter each of the commands noted below and wait for the output to stop scrolling before moving on in the list.

./configure
make sudo cp bmon /usr/bin/
sudo cp bmon.1 /usr/share/man/man1/

Then open a new terminal and type bmon to see the display.

You can change the disply mode by entering a single letter:

(o)verview (g)raphical (d)etailed

Type man bmon to access the manual where you’ll find more information on using bmon.
